Liu Yang, born on September 27, 1980, is a Chinese astronaut and the first woman astronaut from China. She was born in Jiaozuo, Henan Province, and grew up in Shandong Province. Liu graduated from Tsinghua University with a degree in aerospace engineering.
In 2003, Liu was selected as one of China's 14 female astronauts. She was chosen for her strong physical condition, good health, and strong psychological quality. In 2010, she became the first Chinese woman to go into space, traveling aboard Shenzhou X spacecraft.
